The finished product always looks amazing, but what does it take to create a great photo?
First off, you start with the models. In our case, we’re using the PUMA sailing and shore crew. Professional sailors yes, professional models, no. How do you explain to Michi Mueller that we need to flat iron his mop or we need to throw some hairspray in Justin Ferris’ crop cut? Talk about needing negotiation skills!!!
Then there is always the wardrobe- the real star of the show. Since we’re normally shooting clothes before they're available in store, we only have access to sample sizes, which is a medium. Yes, you’re thinking, who fits into a medium? We have a few guys to make the cut, and a few we squeeze into the clothes. It’s much easier when the shoot calls for the wet weather gear, our sailor selection greatly increases.
And then there are the stormy scenes- where the guys are covered in water and looking like their getting beat down by the weather. All we can say is thanks for fire trucks, garden hoses and retouching! We can take a photo in daylight, on the dock in the Newport Shipyard and have it look like it was shot in the middle of the gnarliest storm in history.
