Inversion Test

We passed the test! PUMA Ocean Racing is in it's final days before the boat and crew leave for Spain, and they can check inversion test off their list. The boat passed the Volvo manadatory safety test on August 19.

What is an inversion test? The boat isn't actually inverted, that would be too risky. It's more like a tipping test. The boat has it's keel canted over to 40 degrees, putting the rails in the water. One of the keel rams (technical for keel controls) is disconneceted to make sure that if one fails while the boat is in the ocean, that the crew can still continue sailing. Tests are done on both the port and starboard side.

This does sound more complicated than it actually is. Basically, the inversion test is a simple proceedure to ensure all keel systems are working.
